Pinakothek Der Moderne
(and crazy ice cream)

Day 1

"The public history of modern art is the story of conventional people not knowing what they are dealing with."
~ Golda Meir

I know, I know. I'm in Europe. The bastion of Medieval, Renaissance, and Impressionist art. The birthplace of El Greco. Da Vinci. Monet. Van Gogh.

But call me an uncultured swine, because I love modern art. The weird stuff. The stuff that makes you say, "My toddler could make that."

I don't care. It makes me happy. So I went to visit the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich's excellent modern art museum. It was small enough not to be overwhelming, but still had some really excellent pieces.

"AIDS/Jeep/Bicycle", Andy Warhol

"Dancer," Oskar Schlemmer

"The Acrobat's Exercises," Rene Magritte

"La Femme Au Violon," Pablo Picasso

"Der Gestürzte" (The Fallen One)

Wilhelm Lehmbruck

I didn't note the artist or title of this one, but I love it!

"The Key to Dreams," Rene Magritte

"Map 1980," Alighiero Boetti

This one is fascinating because on first glance it looks like a painting but it's actually all embroidery!

I didn't note the artist of this one either, but it was painted during the 1930's to represent the ideal Aryan female form, and was used in Nazi propaganda.

After the museum, we went on a sojourn to visit Der Verrückte Eismacher im Wunderland (The Crazy Ice Cream Maker in Wonderland)

The variety of flavors was, well, crazy, but totally worth going off the beaten path. I had one scoop of kirsche (cherry) and one scoop of weisbier (wheat beer)!

That evening, we met our tour group and had a delicious dinner at one of Munich's oldest Brauereien (breweries), and got the authentic beer hall experience!
